My daughter Rachel, 10 years, started classes with Glynis Brummer a year ago now. Rachel was diagnosed as Dyslexic, with fine motor problems but very gifted. When she was only 5 and before coming to Glynis, she had had numerous intervention measures (some for years) to help her dyslexia and motor problems, none particularly successful. To mention the main ones: SPELD, Kinesiology, Brain Gym, Occupational Therapy, Davis Dyslexia course.

I first heard about Glynis, and her programme, through a recommendation via the NZ Association for Gifted Children Forum. Rachel has made enormous gains in both reading and writing in the last year with Glynis. We intend to carry on indefinitely with Glynis as Rachel looks forward to her lessons as she finally feels she is making headway with reading and writing. Glynis is also used to dealing with gifted children so can relate to Rachel intellectually as well as helping her with her learning difficulty. Glynis is one of the most knowledgeable, positive and encouraging teachers I have come across in all my years of dealing with specialist teachers and I have dealt with alot! Thanks Glynis, you have been a life saver.

We decided to try Johansen Sound Therapy on the recommendation of Glynis Brummer at Smart Learning to further improve our son’s auditory processing. He had completed an INPP programme but both Glynis and my husband and I felt there was still room for improvement.

Within a week of beginning the programme Ryan complained of our television being ‘way too loud’. He was in his bedroom down the hall and the lounge door was closed, additionally the television volume wasn’t particularly loud. I phoned Glynis about this the following morning, concerned.

Glynis explained that if you can imagine wearing a blind fold, then it’s removed, the light seems very bright. It was the same for Ryan. The way that he was processing sound was already changing. The following week, he announced that he was ‘going to his bedroom to read’. We were both pretty astounded with this as up until this point, reading for pleasure was probably the last activity he would ever choose to do in his free time.

He began reading every single night, for sometimes as long as forty minute stretch, which was again quite amazing to us, since his concentration was obviously also improving. Again I called Glynis about this as I wondered whether there wasn’t some kind of subliminal message on the C.D urging him on to read. She assured me there certainly wasn’t! However, something had clicked and all of a sudden the words on the page were making a lot more sense and he was actually able to get some enjoyment out of reading.

This continued solidly for approximately three and half more months – all he wanted to do was read, read, read. It was a fantastic break through and we are expecting to see a flow on effect in his spelling and other areas as we continue with the programme.

I would say to any prospective parent considering this program – ‘give it a go.’ It has certainly made a huge difference in our household thus far.

My son has been attending Smart Learning Solutions since April 2008. After undertaking the INPP Programme this provided me with a good understanding of where my son needed specific help in. From there exercises and tutoring, specific to his areas of development, commenced. Since this time my son has showed continued improvement, visible through regular follow up reviews.

My son enjoys coming to his weekly lesson as the exercises/topics are interesting, taught in a fun environment, keeping him stimulated and focused on learning. Having one-on-one tutoring means my son can work at his own pace until he fully understands the topic.

I have dealt with both Heidi and Glynis whom I have found to be professional, caring and encouraging at all times. The written reports outlining topics covered and progress made have been most informative and a useful tool to pass onto my son’s school teacher to aide him in the classroom.
